Types of Patient Care Technician Jobs

Types of Patient Care Technician jobs

A patient care technician has many fields to choose from. Depending on your skills, preferences, and convenience, you can choose whichever fits you the best. But, you must have communication and interaction skills. That aside, there are four wonderful places where you can make your contribution:

  • Hospital PTC: This is the most common type of patient care technician job. As a hospital PTC, you will carry out various regular tasks inside the hospital. This can be tending to the patients’ wounds, helping them with their personal hygiene, reporting their personal or health issues to the doctor, checking IV function, and such. What you need the most for this position are good communication skills since you will be working with a wide range of people and lots of kindness since you will be helping them even with the smallest things.
  • Telemetry Technician: You can make a place for yourself inside the intensive care unit. The main task you have to carry out is an electrocardiogram. You will measure a patient’s heartbeats before, during, and after surgery. You will notify the doctors and nurses about changes in waveforms and functions to act accordingly.
  • Dialysis Technician: This one is perhaps the most challenging position for a patient care technician. Only someone who has great empathy and patience will tackle this job. You will be working with dialysis patients specifically, as the name suggests. These patients will seek the treatment on a regular basis, and you will have to assist them in the process frequently. You will also have to answer any questions and worries they may have as politely as possible, and you have to explain everything clearly to them. Basically, your job is to put them at ease since these are all people distressed and in fear of their lives.
  • Emergency Room Technician: As a patient care technician in the emergency room, you can become one of the front liners in the medical industry. It is a huge honor and a huge responsibility because there will be lives depending on you. An emergency room is a terribly busy place, with a lot happening from all sides at all times. So naturally, there are lots of places where your assistance will be valuable. But it also means it will be difficult to catch a break, and you will have to be on the run. The activities you might have to deal with as a PTC in the emergency room include recording patients’ medical history, taking their vitals, collecting samples from labs, maintaining communication with doctors and nurses, and all such matters. It is a fast-paced environment, so you will need to think fast and act quickly.
