What’s in My Work Bag: Essentials Every PCT Should Carry
If you’re a Patient Care Technician (PCT), you already know—no two days are ever the same. Whether you’re taking vitals, helping patients with mobility, or supporting nurses during procedures, your role is essential and always in motion. And when your job requires you to be this prepared, so does your bag.
From stethoscopes to snacks, here’s a peek inside my work bag and all the must-haves that help me get through each shift with confidence, comfort, and care.
1. Stethoscope
Let’s start with the obvious—my trusty stethoscope. Whether I’m checking blood pressure or just want to be ready to assist, I never leave home without it. I prefer one with a lightweight design and clear acoustics—because when time is tight, quality matters.
2. Extra Gloves and PPE
While most facilities provide personal protective equipment, I always keep a few extra pairs of gloves and a spare mask or two in my bag. It’s better to be over-prepared—especially when things get busy or supplies are low.
3. Notepad & Pen
You can’t always count on a computer being nearby when you need to jot down a note, a patient’s concern, or a task reminder. A pocket-sized notepad and a few pens are lifesavers on the floor.
Pro tip: I keep a highlighter and fine-tip marker too—color-coding can help make sense of a chaotic shift.
4. Watch with a Second Hand
A reliable watch is essential for checking pulse and respiration rates. Digital is fine, but I’m old-school—I like the simplicity of an analog face with a ticking second hand.
5. Water Bottle and Electrolytes
Hydration is crucial during long shifts. I bring a refillable water bottle and keep a few electrolyte packs (like Liquid I.V. or Nuun) in my bag for those especially hectic days when water just isn’t enough.
6. Healthy Snacks
You don’t always get a lunch break right on time, so snacks are non-negotiable. I pack a few of these every shift:
-
Protein bars
-
Trail mix
-
String cheese
-
Apple slices with peanut butter
Snacks that are easy to eat quickly and don’t need refrigeration = win.
7. Compression Socks (and an Extra Pair!)
If you know, you know. Compression socks are a game-changer for sore feet and legs. I keep an extra pair in my bag just in case I need to swap them mid-shift—or if a coworker needs a backup!
8. Hand Lotion & Lip Balm
Frequent handwashing = dry skin. I keep travel-size lotion and lip balm in my side pocket because it makes a huge difference in comfort by the end of the day.
9. Travel Toiletries & “Freshen-Up” Kit
Sometimes a quick freshen-up can reset your whole mood. I keep a small zip pouch with:
-
Deodorant
-
Dry shampoo
-
Breath mints
-
Toothbrush & paste
-
Face wipes
Because patients (and coworkers!) appreciate a fresh PCT.
10. Phone Charger or Portable Power Bank
Let’s face it—your phone is your lifeline for work updates, scheduling, or just catching a break. I always keep a charger and/or power bank in my bag so I’m not scrambling when the battery dips below 10%.
Bonus: Something Personal
Whether it’s a photo of my dog, a good book, a podcast queued up for break time, or a tiny charm from my kid, I always carry something that reminds me of why I do what I do. It helps ground me, especially on tough days.
Being a Patient Care Technician requires heart, hustle, and serious multitasking skills—and your bag should reflect that. Everyone’s essentials will look a little different, but the goal is the same: to feel ready, stay comfortable, and keep delivering exceptional care.
